The University of Arizona is located in Tucson, Arizona, the county seat of Pima County. With a population of 542,629, Tucson is the second-largest city in Arizona based on the 2020 U.S. Census, and its metropolitan statistical area (MSA) has a population of 1,043,433. Anchored by Tucson, the Arizona Sun Corridor encompasses both Tucson and Phoenix, and the combined statistical area for Tucson and Nogales is larger. Situated 60 miles (97 km) north of the US-Mexico border and 108 miles (174 km) southeast of Phoenix, Tucson was the 53rd-largest metropolitan area and the 34th-largest city in the United States as of 2014.

The climate in Tucson, Arizona can be characterized as a hot desert climate with two main seasons: a hot summer and a mild winter. The North American Monsoon in summer and Pacific storms in January bring the highest amount of precipitation to Tucson, which averages about 10.61 inches (269.5 mm) annually. However, fall and spring are generally dry and sunny. Despite sharing the same latitude as Phoenix, Tucson has a cooler and wetter climate due to its elevation and orographic lift in the nearby mountains. Although it may experience occasional higher daytime temperatures during winter, it remains cooler than Phoenix.
