Fort Myers, named after Colonel Abraham Myers, has a long and intriguing history that dates back to 1850. The fort was named after a prior local fort built during the Seminole Wars. Myers was a former army officer who served in several positions in the Quartermaster Department of the United States Army from 1833-1861 before serving as quartermaster general of the Confederate States Army from 1861–1864.
