Allentown, located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, had a population of 125,845 during the 2020 census. Allentown is the third-largest city in Pennsylvania, following Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, and is also the fastest-growing major metropolitan area in the state. With 861,899 residents as of 2020, Allentown is the largest city in both Lehigh County and the Lehigh Valley, ranking as the 68th most populous metropolitan area in the US. In addition, Allentown serves as the county seat of Lehigh County, which was established in 1762.

Once a major industrial center, Allentown's economy was primarily driven by manufacturing. However, with the decline of heavy industry in the Rust Belt during the 1980s, the city began to transition towards a service-oriented economy in the late 20th century. Air Products and PPL Corporation are some of the major corporations based in Allentown. Lehigh Valley Health Network, with a workforce of over 7,800 people as of 2007, is the city's largest employer. Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, which is the primary facility of Lehigh Valley Health Network, features 877 licensed beds and 46 operating rooms, making it the third-largest hospital in Pennsylvania.
